Steel Buildings That Stop Sweating
Pole barn and metal building insulation is a big part of our work in farm country. Christian County has about 1,150 farms according to Wikipedia, and most of them have at least one steel building: a machine shed, a hay barn, a shop or an equipment garage. Bare steel sweats. When warm, damp air touches cold metal, water condenses and drips onto equipment, tools, feed and floors. In a heated shop, bare steel also loses heat as fast as the heater can make it.
Why closed-cell foam on steel
Closed-cell foam bonds directly to steel panels and purlins. It insulates at R-5 to R-7 per inch (HomeGuide) and keeps moist air from reaching the cold metal, so condensation has nowhere to form. It also seals the gaps at panel laps and around doors that let wind and dust in. One application handles insulation, air sealing and condensation control.
Other options
For buildings that will get an interior liner or ceiling, open-cell foam or blown-in insulation above a ceiling can cost less. For a wood-framed pole barn with a finished interior, batts or blown-in in the walls with foam at the girts and rim may be the better value. We look at how you use the building before suggesting a method.
How you use the building matters
A hay barn that only needs to stop dripping might get a thinner layer of foam under the roof. A heated shop held at 55F all winter needs more on walls and roof. A building that houses animals needs ventilation planning along with insulation. Tell us what the building is for and we will size the job to that.
Code and permits
Agricultural buildings are often treated differently under building codes than homes or shops with living space. Check with the county or city before work begins, especially if the building has a living area or will be used commercially.

Costs That Apply to Steel and Pole Buildings
| Job | Published range (source) |

| Common job minimum | $1,000 to $2,000 or more (HomeGuide) |
These HomeGuide (2026) and Fixr (2025) ranges are general, not specific to pole barns. Building height, steel profile, foam thickness and access change the total. We measure your building and the written estimate is the price.
How a Building Gets Insulated
1. Walk the building
We measure, note the steel profile, framing, doors and how the building is used.
2. Plan and quote
Foam type and thickness for walls and roof, written out with the price.
3. Prep
Equipment moved or covered, surfaces cleaned and dried.
4. Spray
Foam applied to the planned thickness, then cleanup.

Pole Barn & Metal Building Insulation Questions
Will spray foam stop my barn roof from dripping?
Yes. Closed-cell under the steel keeps moist air off the cold metal, so condensation does not form.
Does foam need to be covered in a shop?
Some uses call for a thermal or ignition barrier over the foam. We discuss what applies to your building and use.
Can you insulate a building with equipment inside?
Yes, with prep. Equipment is moved or covered before spraying.
Is foam worth it in an unheated barn?
If condensation is the problem, a thinner layer under the roof often solves it at a lower cost.
